Electric Vehicle Rebates Sweeten Purchase
You don’t want to miss out on the Electric Vehicle (EV) incentives available in your province! The sticker price of many EVs is
higher than that of most traditional gas-powered cars, so rebates can make owning an EV cheaper – and more convenient. Both the
Federal government and many of its provincial counterparts have plans whereby they offer rebates on the purchase and lease of EVs.
Some also subsidize the purchase and installation of charging stations.
There are four categories of EVs that are targeted by the provincial and federal rebates. They are:
- BEV – a battery-electric vehicle completely powered by electric batteries.
- PHEV – a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle that has both an electric motor as well as a gasoline engine.
- ER-EV – An extended range electric vehicle has both an electric motor and a battery that is recharged by a combination of electricity and
gas.
- FCEV – a fuel-cell electric vehicle 100% powered by hydrogen.
The Federal and Provincial EV Rebates
What follows is a listing of the various government programs available as of early 2023. These programs are subject to change, of
course.
Federal: The Zero Emissions Program (iZEV) offers federal incentives of up to $5,000 for eligible electric and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.
In addition to this, iZEV provides funding for electric vehicle charging infrastructure.
Provincial: Many of the provinces have their own programs, which stack on top of the Federal ones. From west to east:
British Columbia currently offers $4,000 for the purchase or lease of a BEV or FCEV. PHEVs have varying rebates, depending on the range of the
battery. There is a price cap for eligible vehicles that mirrors that of the federal program of between $55,000 and $70,000. (Note:
all jurisdictions have a price cap, with varying upper limits.) BC also will cover up to half the cost of installing a Level 2 home
charger, up to a maximum of $350.
The Prairie Provinces and Ontario: Currently you are out of luck, though of course there is the Federal rebate available.
Quebec and the Atlantic Provinces
Quebec’s rebate is generous – up to $7,000 for an BEV or FCEV. PHEV rebates range up to $5000, depending on the size of the battery.
New Brunswick has rebates of up to $5,000 for BEVs, with varying ranges for PHEVS. Used and leased EVs are also covered, and the province rebates
half of a purchase and installation of a home charger to a maximum of $750.
Nova Scotia has rebates of up to $3,000 on BEVs and PHEVS, with a varying range for the latter. Used BEVS and E-bikes are also eligible for a
rebate.
Prince Edward Island has the $5,750 rebate for BEVS and $3,250 for PHEV, regardless of battery range.
Newfoundland and Labrador offers $2,500 for the purchase of a new or used BEV and $1,500 for a new or used PHEF, regardless of range. Leased vehicles qualify.
The Yukon has a $5,000 rebate for new BEVS, FECEVs and PHEVS with a range of 50 km or more. A 50% rebate is available for home charger up to
$750.
Access to the rebates is easy, so don’t miss out on these EV incentives available in your province!
